Welcome to the School of Computing! As an incoming student for Fall 2022, we put together this page to help provide important information to assist you as you begin your graduate program with us. Please take some time to look over the entire page.
August 15/16: Laptop pickup and learning to use your computer like a programmer
August 19: Department orientation 8:30am-Noon WEB
August 22: Fall semester begins
September 2: Tuition due to income accounting

You will be enrolled in fall classes once all holds are cleared and the following forms are returned to Leslie@cs.utah.edu:
Laptop Use Policy
The department will register you for all of your courses. Each class is four credit hours for a total of 40 credits. You will not be enrolled full-time for summer and the fall(2) semesters (keep this in mind if you have financial aid).
Fall 2022 (12 credits total): Monday-Friday 8:30am-12:30pm
CS 6010, CS 6011, and CS 6012 should appear under “My Classes” through CIS once enrolled. These three courses will be five weeks long each:
- CS 6010– Begins 8/22/22, ends 9/23/22
- Drop by 8/26/22, withdraw by 9/07/22
- CS 6011– Begins 9/26/22, ends 11/04/22
- Drop by 10/01/22, withdraw by 10/16/22
- CS 6012–Begins 11/07/22, ends 12/09/22
- Drop by 11/11/22, withdraw by 11/23/22
*Please contact the Registrar’s Office and Leslie if dropping/withdrawing from a course before the deadline mentioned above.

CS 6010: C++ for Everyone 2nd Edition Cay S. Horstmann
CS 6012: Data Structures & Problem Solving Using Java, 4th Edition. Mark Allen Weiss and Addison Wesley
Spring 2023 (12 credits total) Monday-Friday 9-11am (with CS 6015 on Tuesdays and Thursdays) and Industry Seminar on Wednesday’s at 11:30am
Spring 2023 to Fall 2023 your classes will be taught concurrently.
Summer 2023 (8 credits total): Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 8:30-11:30am
An internship during the summer semester is optional, but cannot be counted toward the total 40 credits of the MSD program. International students must notify the department and International Center at least 30 days before applying for CPT and will register for 1 credit of CS 6945.
Fall 2023 (8 credits total): Monday/Wednesday 8:30-11:30am
CS 6018- Application System Design course is only the first 10 weeks of the semester.
You will choose either CS 6019-Capstone Project or CS 6800- Capstone Internship option which will need to be approved by the MSD faculty. This course does not meet as a class, but you will have a faculty mentor that you will meet with during the semester.

E-mail: UMail is the official form of e-mail communication at the University of Utah and will be used to contact you. Please use this e-mail to request or discuss any student information.
University ID Card: Your UCard is used for room and building access as well as your UTA pass. You may upload your picture and request your UCard through UCard Services.
Our Career Coach, Francine Mahak, can meet 1:1 for job searches, resume help, interviewing, and negotiating. Schedule an appointment with her any time during the program. Career Services uses Handshake for you to explore careers, connect with employers, and find internships.
