Welcome to the School of Computing! As an incoming student for Fall 2024, we put together this page to help provide important information to assist you as you begin your graduate program with us. Please take some time to look over the entire page.

Important Dates:
August 12: Department orientation + laptop pickup- Catmull Gallery and 1250 WEB (Warnock Engineering Building)
August 19: Fall semester begins
August 30: Tuition due to Income Accounting

International Students:
An additional orientation with the International Student and Scholar Services Office is required. Please read through their policies and FAQs here.

Academic Policies & Procedures:
Please read through both the Academic Misconduct Policy and Handbook.
You will be enrolled in fall classes once all holds are cleared and the following forms are returned to Msd-Advisors@cs.utah.edu from your Umail:

Classes:
The department will register you for all of your courses. Each class is four credit hours for a total of 40 credits. You will not be enrolled full-time for summer and the fall(2) semesters (keep this in mind if you have financial aid).

Fall 2024 (12 credits total): Monday-Friday 8:30am-12:30pm
CS 6010, CS 6011, and CS 6012 should appear under “My Classes” through CIS once enrolled. These three courses will be five weeks long each:

  •  CS 6010Begins 8/19/24, ends 9/20/24
    • Drop by 8/23/24, withdraw by 9/4/24
  • CS 6011Begins 9/23/24, ends 11/1/24
    • Drop by 9/27/24, withdraw by 10/9/24
  • CS 6012–Begins 11/4/24, ends 12/6/24
    • Drop by 11/7/24, withdraw by 11/13/24

*Please contact the Registrar’s Office and Msd-Advisors@cs.utah.edu if dropping/withdrawing from a course before the deadline mentioned above.

Spring 2025 (12 credits total) Monday-Friday 9-11am (with CS 6015 on Tuesdays and Thursdays) and Industry Seminar on Wednesday’s at 11:30am
Spring 2024 to Fall 2024 your classes will be taught concurrently.

Summer 2025 (8 credits total): Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 8:30-11:30am
An internship during the summer semester is optional, but cannot be counted toward the total 40 credits of the MSD program. International students must notify the department and International Center at least 30 days before applying for CPT and will register for 1 credit of CS 6945.

Fall 2025 (8 credits total): Monday/Wednesday 8:30-11:30am
CS 6018- Application System Design course is only the first 10 weeks of the semester.
You will choose either CS 6019-Capstone Project or CS 6800- Capstone Internship option which will need to be approved by the MSD faculty. This course does not meet as a class, but you will have a faculty mentor that you will meet with during the semester.

University ID Card:  Your UCard is used for room and building access as well as your UTA pass. You may upload your picture and request your UCard through UCard Services.
