Welcome to the Kahlert School of Computing! As an incoming student for Fall 2025, we put together this page to help provide important information to assist you as you begin your graduate program with us. Please take some time to look over the entire page.

Important Dates:
August 11: Department orientation + laptop pickup in MSD room 3255 MEB (Merrill Engineering Building)
August 18: Fall semester begins
August 29: Tuition due to Office of the Bursar

International Students:
An additional orientation with the International Student and Scholar Services Office is required. Please read through their policies and FAQs here.

Academic Policies & Procedures:

You will be enrolled in fall classes once all holds are cleared and the following forms are returned to Leslie.Wallwork@utah.edu from your Umail:

Classes:
The department will register you for all of your program courses. Each class is four credit hours for a total of 40 credits. You will not be enrolled full-time for summer semester and fall(2) semester (keep this in mind if you have financial aid).

Fall 2025 (12 credits total): Monday through Friday 8:30 AM -12:30 PM
CS 6010, CS 6011, and CS 6012 should appear under “My Classes” through CIS once enrolled. These three courses will be five weeks long each:

  •  CS 6010Begins 8/18/25, ends 9/19/25
    • Drop by 8/22/25, withdraw by 9/3/25
  • CS 6011Begins 9/22/25, ends 10/31/25
    • Drop by 9/26/25, withdraw by 10/8/25
  • CS 6012–Begins 11/3/25, ends 12/5/25
    • Drop by 11/6/25, withdraw by 11/12/25

Please contact the Registrar’s Office and Leslie.Wallwork@utah.edu if dropping/withdrawing from a course before the deadline mentioned above.

Spring 2026 (12 credits total) Monday through Friday 9-11:20 AM (with CS 6015 on Tuesdays and Thursdays) and Industry Seminar on Wednesday’s at 11:30 AM
(Spring 2026 to Fall 2026 your classes will be taught concurrently)

Summer 2026 (8 credits total): Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 8:30-11:30 AM
An internship during the summer semester is optional, but cannot be counted toward the total 40 credits of the MSD program. International students must notify the department and International Center at least 30 days before applying for CPT and will register for 1 credit of CS 6945.

Fall 2026 (8 credits total): Monday/Wednesday 8:30-11:30 AM
CS 6018- Application System Design course is only the first 10 weeks of the semester.
You may choose either CS 6019-Capstone Project or CS 6800- Capstone Internship option, which will need to be approved by the MSD faculty. This course does not meet as a class, but you will have faculty mentor meetings throughout the semester.

If you choose to enroll in CS courses outside of the MSD program, please contact the course instructor for a permission code.
